The Help Introduction Lesson

Part I: Quotes

  1. “Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.”
    Frederick Douglass

  1. "If you teach him how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master". (Frederick Douglass, speaking of himself in his book, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, page 49).

Both of the above quotes are from Frederick Douglass, a black man from Maryland.  Please interpret them, as well as consider what they meant in the life of a slave.  What assumptions can you draw from them regarding slave expectations, education and life?  Do you agree with what Mr. Douglass says?  Write a short response to these quotes/questions below.

Part III: Exit Slip: 3-2-1

Below please write three things you learned today, two questions you have (could be prediction/connection questions, questions about the text/material you worked with today, etc) and one thing you experienced during the lesson that really worked for you.
